Fears, hopes, expectations — and a great deal of reflection. New Faces is the voice of those who’ve just stepped into the world of animation, yet are already unafraid to speak about what truly matters. Because if not now, then when? About Kyiv’s nuclear engineers during the time of the (bloody) Budapest Memorandum. About love and separation against the backdrop of war. About self-acceptance — and even about borscht. These stories are unexpected, sincere, and genuine. Because while the faces behind them may be new to LINOLEUM’s audience, their dreams and rage are painfully familiar to all of us.

Please note that the Ukrainian competition and New Faces are combined into one screening.

The total running time is 80 minutes.

  • Message
    Shunia Nalysnyk

    Ukraine | 01:22 | 2025

A dark summer evening, an hour before curfew. The air is heavy, ripe, like a black cherry about to burst from the heat and silence. The Rooster and the Dog walk through the forest — not because they have somewhere to go, but because they can’t do otherwise. The grass is taller than hope, and the branches creak like the old floorboards of a house long since burned down.

    Elvira Khachaturova

    Ukraine | 01:00 | 2024

Housework often goes unnoticed, is undervalued, and disproportionately falls on women’s shoulders. This limits their opportunities for career advancement, rest, and personal fulfilment. An ufair distribution of responsibilities creates imbalance in relationships and reinforces gender inequality in society. Recognising the value of invisible labour helps to build fairer living conditions for everyone.

Under the weight of tragic circumstances, a young woman is forced to part with her husband. As she goes about her daily life and maintains contact with her lover, she struggles to overcome fear and despair. But if that connection is lost will she be able to cope with her feelings?

  • Nuclear Safety Constructions Bureau
    Iehor Strelkov

    Ukraine | 05:00 | 2025

Four employees of the research institute are working in the design bureau at the time Ukraine signs the Budapest Memorandum.

  • Zugzwang
    Rita Bezditko

    Ukraine | 01:03 | 2024

What to do if you encounter zugzwang in chess?

  • Borscht, or Fried Shoes
    Hanna Beskrovna, Volodymyr Iljin

    Ukraine | 02:18 | 2025

The Carrot Warrior, upon discovering his enslaved kin, performs a magical ritual and urges them to open their eyes to their utter lack of rights in this cruel world. Who is he — a half-mad Don Quixote, defying the eternal plant-animal dualism? Or a warrior-prophet, pointing others toward the path of salvation in an open field of possibilities? The choice is left to the viewer.
