Most works in this block fall under the umbrella of time and its documentation. Each of the authors finds own method for expressing this problem: working with family archive, own and others’ memories, trying to snatch material features of time, comparing old and new media, researching intermediary states between different time intervals, changes in space and possible narratives.

  • Three Sketches
    Adam Butcher

    UK | 2018 | 07:56

Three Sketches takes a novel approach to storytelling, giving the viewer an extended stay in three locations. As our senses immerse in the manifold details, events seem to repeat themselves in a chronologically dysfunctional way. The viewer is encouraged to draw their own.

  • Firstly
    Jacek Jędrzejczak

    Poland | 2018 | 04:06

„Firstly” is a part of Jacek Jędrzejczak’s project named „TEN” and as such it confronts the subject of human being in a relation to time. Duration becomes an expression of the slump of continuum, stoppage, and as a result – a change, an inertness. In a tension of slowdown Jacek Jędrzejczak finds the space for reflection, constituted on noticing a broader perspective and deeper dimensions.

    Wong Man Sze

    Hong Kong | 2017 | 01:49

Heavily influenced by John Cage’s concept of silence, Ride tries to interpret silence in an animated way and explores the possibilities of ambience. I chose to visualize the ambient sound of MTR train since train noise is rarely appreciated.

  • the Thing is Lost
    Arash Akhgari

    Canada | 2018 | 02:31

"The Thing is Lost" is an abstract, audio-visual experience, inspired from monotonous, still overwhelming and omnipresent existence of the internal dialogue. This film is an emotional journey through expressions, confusions, colors and affects. A journey in hope to "find" or to "be found", yet "the Thing is Lost"...

The repercussions of her negative coping mechanisms affect her later relationships and friendships.

  • In film/On video
    Ignacio Tamarit

    Argentina | 2018 | 03:30

Сan film and video coexist in the same film? Here, 16 mm film and VHS video tapes need each other in order to exist.
Thanks to the transparent clear leader of 16 mm acetate film, we can visualize in movement the materiality of the analog video support, glued on top of the film, serving as skeleton and structure of the vhs tapes intervened. A film? A video? Both and none at the same time...

  • 165708
    Josephine Massarella

    Canada | 2017 | 07:00

Shot entirely in 16mm black and white film using single frame photography, 165708 employs in-camera techniques and chemical manipulation of processed film to produce an eidetic study of temporal elasticity. Techniques include flicker, time-lapse, light painting, stop motion, tinting, and toning. Combined with cycles of alternating exposed frames, these methods imbue the work with a rhythmic magnetism, apparent both in the tempo and the aesthetic of the images.

  • Cronographies
    Fernando Domínguez

    Colombia | 2016 | 05:12

From a geographical perspective, this work researches a method of how space can be produced. The result is a re-production of everyday space from a poetic perspective linked to audiovisual technologies.

    Benjamin Vertu

    France | 2017 | 03:41

The building circular—A cage, glazed—a glass lantern about the Size of Ranelagh—The prisoners in their cells, occupying the circumference—The officers in the centre. By blinds and other contrivances, the inspectors concealed […] from the observation of the prisoners: hence the sentiment of a sort of omnipresence—The whole circuit reviewable with little, or if necessary without any, change of place. One station in the inspection part affording the most perfect view of every cell.
    — Jeremy Bentham, 1798
