The Truth in Close Up
The Truth in Close Up
Volodymyr Goncharov

USSR | 09:40 | 1988

In the film’s preamble, the superstructure of yesterday's state apparatus is presented as a pyramid, supported by the well-known sculpture "Worker and collective farm woman" instead of an athlete. Symbols of history on this pyramid: Stalin, Khrushchev, Brezhnev. In the meeting rooms, dolls mindlessly vote automatically, picking up mandates. Pompous demonstrations, slogan shawl. And finally, the fall of Brezhnev's mannequin, which destroys the whimsical pyramid.

The politics of perestroika and glasnost in the late 1980s allowed such artistic expressions. However, the State Cinema of the USSR for a long time did not permit the demonstration of "Truth in close-up" in cinemas and on television, which emphasised the aptness and relevance of the film genre chosen by the director – "political farce".
