What makes a woman a woman? Self-awareness? An intrigued gaze from the outside? Or perhaps it’s a lucky (or unlucky) accident that assigns us specific sex organs? The filmmakers of the non-competition programme LADIES FIRST explore these questions with their viewers. Ten sincere confessions from across the globe present women in a variety of states and situations — at work and home, in despair or ecstasy, in a lover’s bed or on a surgeon’s table. And despite all their differences, they share one thing: being a woman is not a given. It’s a serious choice.
