In the early 1990s, creative professionals in Ukraine got video cameras in their hands, and they immediately began experimenting with the new genre of arts. The idea of working on the edge where visual arts and cinema meets was very attractive for them. In the early years of the decade, they created many works appealing to the word’s and Soviet’s traditions of visual culture, and at the same time - to the aesthetics of television and world cinematography. They touched upon the agendas of video documenting and the problematics of truth and lies. The lecture will focus on the first creative endeavors of Ukrainian filmmakers in the new genre of video, the period of "de-picturing" and the attempts to create their first TV shows dedicated to various aspects of art.
