The story of a rogue who, throughout the ages, repeatedly attempts to sell Ukraine to foreign powers. Yet the country's only possible path of development lies within the "family of brotherly nations" of the Soviet Union.

This film concentrates virtually every propaganda message that continues to feature prominently in contemporary Russian propaganda. Among them are enduring Soviet myths about the "brotherly nations" and the dangers posed by foreign media.

Cain's Tears combines a fast-paced plot, grotesque caricatured characters, and songs performed by the vocal-instrumental ensemble Kobza, making it an engaging and therefore particularly insidious example of propaganda.
