This year, the international animation festival LINOLEUM will be held live again! The festival will take place on September 4-8 at the first innovation park UNIT.City in Kyiv.
The theme of LINOLEUM 2024 is PLAYGROUNDS.
The official trailer for this year's LINOLEUM was created by Yuri Yefanov, an artist and director from Zaporizhzhia who uses game simulations to create digital dimensions of otherness. In his works, he examines the interaction between everyday life and politics, creating his own social systems and mythologies. The director's projects have been shown at numerous film festivals and art venues in Europe and North America.
"I am designing the future based on the disturbing situation the world is in now. I wondered if it was possible to imagine a future that was the opposite of today's globally tense, pre-apocalyptic state. Game simulation is a very convenient tool in this sense. This video is the result of these thoughts." - Yuri Yefanov.
Psychiatrist Eric Berne stated that "we all play games all the time, though we don't always realise it." The only shame is that you can't restore your 'life' in our reality.
In the real world, politicians compete with one another to protect their own "playground." The board game that used to capture everyone's attention, unfortunately, does not distract from the sounds of shelling in the shelter. And while video games remain a way of escapism for some, others use their gaming experience to control combat drones.
This year, LINOLEUM is also focusing on Ukrainian gamedev, with a series of lectures and workshops, a presentation of Ukrainian indie games, and a workshop by the famous Austrian collective TOTAL REFUSAL, which will present its approach to contemporary video games. Based on a set of theoretical foundations such as game studies, political economy or anthropology they will discuss several games as well as possible tools for artistic intervention, appropriation and repurposing.
The classic concept of the festival remains: screenings of international, commissioned and Ukrainian competitions, five blocks of animation for and by kids and teens, an experimental program and Ladies First, as well as New Faces representing promising Ukrainian authors and thematic selections from foreign curators.
Passes for LINOLEUM 2024 will go on sale starting July 15.
LINOLEUM 2024 is supported by the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, the Austrian Cooperation Office in Lviv, Ukraine Office Austria and the Polish Institute in Kyiv.
